Conversational AI is software that understands what people say or type in natural language and replies in the same way, keeping track of the conversation as it goes. It combines language understanding, which works out what a person means, with language generation, which writes a fitting reply.

Large language models have made it far more capable, because they follow context, handle follow-up questions and explain things in plain words. Common uses are customer service assistants, voice assistants and tools that answer questions about documents or data.

For example, a sales manager types 'Which accounts bought less this quarter?' and then 'Only in the west region'. The system understands that the second message narrows the first, rather than starting a new question.
